• Who We Are?

The ministries of our organization were borne primarily out of the personal history of the President of In His Grip Ministries and to some degree in response to the statistical information provided by The National Runaway Switchboard which estimates that on any given night there are approximately 1.3 million homeless youth living unsupervised on the streets, in abandoned buildings, with friends or strangers, making them extremely vulnerable to dangers, drugs, depression and death. In Illinois in general and in Chicago in particular, there has been a continual increase in the number of homeless youth and young adults. For youth and young adults homeless in Chicago and many of the surrounding suburbs, it is attributed to: pregnant or parenting teens, former or current wards of the State Department of Children & Family Services (DCFS), familial domestic violence, or those youth who have been kicked out of their family homes after openly identifying themselves as Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual, Transgender or Questioning (LGBTQ) The Chicago Coalition for the Homeless (CCH) indicated that in the year 2011 to 2012 the homeless population of Chicago’s youth and young adults raging in age from 14-21, was 10.4% or 10,995. Further, CCH reported in a survey of 200 homeless youth and young adults, 33% had been physically attacked or assaulted, 20% had been raped or sexually assaulted, and 12% engaged in prostitution.

Because of those statistics and others, we have developed the following ministries to assist those youth and young adults and their ensuing families in overcoming such tragic occurrences, with the prayer of equipping them to rise above what was done to them through no fault of their own.

  • The Dream Project.

is our collaborative of various organizations, designed to teach our youth and young adults how to dream beyond their circumstances and life conditions, making available to them successful entrepreneurs within the community and surrounding communities, exposing them to business planning; business, product & franchise development; social justice; economics; business management and more.

  • Harvard- Hill Scholarships.

are our scholarships specifically written to benefit our youth and young adults that are high risk and exiting out of the Department of Children & Family Services (DCFS) of their respective states within 6 months to 3 years of their departure, who would traditionally struggle qualifying for educational assistance due to the dysfunctional circumstance of their sociological environment.

  • Connections.

addresses the plight of the older adolescents and young adults that are on track to emancipate (age out) from the Child Welfare System within their respective states, who have no viable and/or healthy family connections. The youth participating in this ministry are connected to what we call a “Life” Mentor who provides the much needed emotional and psychological support facilitating them in their pursuit of becoming self-sufficient adults within society.

  • Womb Care.

facilitates holistic and spiritual care of the expectant parents; teaching the importance of caring for the unborn child environmentally, spiritually and emotionally. This ministry hosts a six week class session tailored to the expectant family.

  • Cook Therapy.

ministers to its participants through the unique gift of “table” fellowship, by providing a safe place to be nurtured and work through the many difficulties our youth and young adults encounter in life. Here we embrace the lost art form of speaking, listening and food preparation all while feeding the participants in mind, body and soul.

  • Shalom.

is our Pastoral Counseling & Direction service that provides counseling to those without a mainstream connection to said services. Here, we serve as “Crisis Negotiators” as well as Bereavement Counselors in urban areas where necessary.
